Memorial Day

Memorial Day originated after the American Civil War to commemorate Union and Confederate soldiers who died in the Civil War.  Originally called Decoration Day, the name changed to Memorial Day after World War II.

On June 28, 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which moved the holiday to the last Monday in May.  This law took effect in 1971.

Many celebrations are associated with Memorial Day.  First and foremost is honoring those who have died serving our country with services held at National Cemeteries adorning graves with small American flags.  It is also the kick off to summer with parades and picnics.  One of the longest standing traditions is the Indianapolis 500 Auto race running on Sunday preceding Memorial Day since 1911.

So, however our Memorial Day holidays are spent, let us take a few moments to honor our War Heroes and remember them always in prayer with gratitude for their sacrifice.
